Mary celebrates independent living success in Worcester

12/02/2024

Mary Tait, who lives at Henwick, a four-bed supported living service in Worcester operated by Salutem Care and Education, recently shared her uplifting journey of independent living at a local authority event aimed at inspiring the families and parents of children with learning disabilities.

In July 2023, aged 22, Mary took a significant step in her life by moving into Henwick in July 2023, transitioning from living with her parents and a residential setting during her college years. The move marked a new chapter, offering her the autonomy and support needed to navigate adulthood effectively.

Reflecting on her experience as part of her presentation at the event, Mary said: "The best thing about supported living is being independent - cooking, making your own bed - I don't like it, but I have to do it!

“And I'm going to see Take That and Olly Murs this year! I was supported to book the tickets."

Her words resonate with the essence of what Henwick aims to achieve: empowering individuals to embrace independence while acknowledging the challenges it brings.

The event saw Mary addressing an audience, sharing her narrative of transformation and the positive impact of living in a home run by Salutem. Despite initial nerves, Mary's speech was a triumph, leaving her feeling 'amazing' and open to future speaking opportunities.

Life at Henwick is more than just care; it's about enrichment and personal growth. Mary enjoys a variety of activities, from winding up the staff with her sense of humour to indulging in her love for music, movies, and live concerts. Her recent endeavours into yo-yo and juggling, along with therapeutic pony sessions, highlight the diverse opportunities available for the young people to explore their interests.

Charlotte Parsons, locality manager at Salutem Care and Education, said: "Mary's journey is a testament to the empowering environment we foster at Henwick. Her story is one of many that exemplifies our commitment to supporting each individual's path to independence while ensuring they have the care and opportunities needed to thrive."

Henwick remains dedicated to its mission of enabling young adults with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible. Mary's story is a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the possibilities that arise when care, support, and personal determination converge.
