Nottingham resident finds fulfilment and independence working at local charity shop

25/03/2024

Elisha Lenford, a 35-year-old resident of Belvoir Lodge, part of Salutem Care and Education, has found joy and a sense of purpose through her work at a local Scope charity shop.

Belvoir Lodge in Nottingham, is dedicated to supporting adults with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and complex health needs, promoting active, dignified, and independent lives for its residents.

Elisha has been a part of the Belvoir Lodge community for 15 years, where she has consistently demonstrated a keen willingness to assist in various tasks, showcasing her capabilities and desire to contribute meaningfully to her community. Recognising her enthusiasm and potential, the staff at Belvoir Lodge, particularly Amy Hart, supported Elisha in securing a position at the Scope charity shop, where she now works once a week.

In her role, Elisha is involved in sorting and pricing donations, particularly in the baby section, a task she approaches with diligence and care. Additionally, she has been supported to use the till, an opportunity that has further bolstered her confidence and skills. However, it's the simple pleasures of having coffee and engaging in conversations with the shop's patrons and staff, especially the person on the till, that Elisha treasures the most. These interactions, where Elisha communicates in her unique way, highlight the importance of inclusion and understanding within communities.

The initiative to integrate Elisha into the workforce came about after her proactive involvement in various tasks at Belvoir Lodge, including helping with petty cash checks and medication stock management. Her reaction to the proposal of working in the community - a beaming smile - underscored her readiness and eagerness for this new chapter.

Sydonna Bartley, Registered Manager at Belvoir Lodge, expressed her admiration for Elisha's journey, saying: "Elisha's transition into the workforce is a testament to her resilience, capability, and the positive impact of community inclusion. Her happiness and sense of achievement are palpable, and it's a reminder of the extraordinary outcomes that can be achieved when individuals are given the support and opportunities they deserve."

Elisha's mother has also shared her joy and pride in her daughter's accomplishments, reflecting on the journey with immense gratitude and optimism for the future.

Elisha's story is not just one of personal achievement but also serves as an inspiring example of how communities and organisations can work together to support individuals with disabilities, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives and make valuable contributions to society.
