Paignton care home empowers Greg to fulfil lifelong dream of visiting Normandy

03/07/2023

Warwick House, a six-bed residential care home located in Paignton, has fulfilled a lifelong dream for one of its residents, 60-year-old Greg Field.

With the unwavering support of the manager, Caroline Wallace, and key worker, Ewa Sosnowski, Greg embarked on a remarkable journey to Normandy, France, fuelling his passion for World War II.

Warwick House specialises in providing comprehensive care and support for adults with learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and complex care needs. Recognised as a hub of vitality and excitement, the care home emphasises the importance of enabling its residents to lead fulfilling and active lifestyles.

Greg, a 60-year-old gentleman with autism and Williams Syndrome, was discharged from hospital in 2020 after a lengthy 35-year stay following being sectioned.

Determined to assist Greg in experiencing new horizons, Warwick House organised a meticulously planned trip to Normandy, tailored to his interests and needs. Under the expert guidance of Caroline and Ewa, Greg embarked on an extraordinary adventure that would leave an indelible mark on his life.

The journey began with a thrilling Eurotunnel experience, which Greg thoroughly enjoyed despite his initial concerns. To ensure his full participation and comfort during the visit, a wheelchair was hired, allowing him to explore various museums and exhibitions. Overwhelmed by his fear of walking, Greg's anxiety was effectively addressed, enabling him to immerse himself in the rich historical tapestry of the region.

During their stay in Normandy, Greg, Caroline, and Ewa stayed in an Airbnb accommodation, providing a comfortable and homely atmosphere throughout the trip. On one memorable evening, they even watched the acclaimed film "Saving Private Ryan," further enhancing Greg's understanding and connection to the wartime era.

For Greg, who had never travelled abroad before, this journey represented a monumental milestone in his life. The opportunity to witness first-hand the historical landmarks, artifacts, and stories that shaped World War II exceeded his expectations and left an indescribable impact on his overall well-being.

Caroline Wallace, manager of Warwick House, expressed her delight at witnessing Greg's journey unfold: "We are thrilled to have been able to make Greg's dream come true. At Warwick House, we believe in empowering our residents to live fulfilling lives and pursue their passions. Seeing Greg's face light up with joy and enthusiasm throughout the trip was truly heart-warming. It is a testament to our commitment to providing exceptional person-centred care."

Ewa Sosnowski, Greg's dedicated key worker, shared her experience, saying: "Supporting Greg on this incredible adventure was an honour and a privilege. Witnessing his sense of wonder and happiness throughout the trip was immensely rewarding. We are incredibly proud of him and hopefully this is the start of building many memories.”
