RESIDENTIAL HOME CELEBRATES ART CLUB RUN BY VOLUNTEERS

14/02/2024

In a stroke of genius, the Friends of Birchwood, a dedicated volunteer group, has been brightening the lives of individuals supported by Birchwood residential home in Buckinghamshire through the medium of art.

In a heartwarming initiative, Birchwood Painting group member Anita Osborne, has been leading a weekly art workshop, which has become a beacon of creativity for the people supported by the team there.

Birchwood, part of Salutem Care and Education, supports individuals with complex health needs. Specialising in peg feeding, JEJ feeding, medication administration, stoma, and catheter care, the facility provides comprehensive care with in-house medication and moving and handling trainers.

Nestled in the home’s winter garden room, the art club benefits from the fantastic natural light, creating the perfect ambiance for the budding artists to explore their creativity. The Birchwood Painting volunteers work closely with the residents, delving into the world of various artists and their techniques, igniting inspiration for the painters to express themselves through art. In the group’s early days, as it began to grow in popularity amongst the residents, the group secured wheelchair-friendly easels from DEMAND, a charity which designs and manufactures enabling equipment, allowing everyone at Birchwood to take part.

Each year, the culmination of these artistic endeavours results in a stunning calendar featuring 12 pieces of art. The calendar has not only been shared across the entire portfolio of homes and educational establishments operated by Salutem Care and Education, but also gifted to the family and friends of those living at the home.

One remarkable success story is that of Mark Urwin, a resident who not only found joy in painting but also turned his passion into a means of communication. Several of Mark’s paintings have been sold, and the proceeds were used to acquire an Eyegaze — a groundbreaking eye-driven communication device. This device now plays a pivotal role in enhancing Mark’s ability to communicate effectively, showcasing the transformative power of art.

Beyond the day-to-day support, Birchwood takes pride in assisting residents in achieving their goals and aspirations. This commitment extends to supporting individuals in attending college courses and embarking on exciting adventures, including a Mediterranean cruise in April 2023 and a trip to Cyprus in June 2023.

Kerry Lettin, operations support manager at Birchwood, expressed her delight at the positive impact of the art club, saying: "The art club has become a source of inspiration and connection for everyone at Birchwood. It goes beyond creating beautiful artworks; it cultivates a sense of purpose and accomplishment and we’re incredibly grateful to Anita and the whole of the Friends of Birchwood group who make a huge contribution to the lives of the people we support.

They also had an exhibition at the local theatre last year in January. Paintings were sold and cards too.

“It’s been amazing to see the progress that people have made, not only in terms of the art they are producing, but their overall wellbeing.

“The art club at Birchwood Care Home exemplifies the power of creativity in fostering connections, breaking down barriers, and enriching the lives of those we support.”

Anita Osborne, the driving force behind the art club, shared her enthusiasm, "Witnessing the residents explore their artistic abilities and express themselves through art has been truly rewarding. It's amazing to see how art can bring people together and enrich their lives. I am especially proud of Mark whose work has come on tremendously since we started the art club and has a real, natural talent."

Lesley Weeks, who lives at Birchwood and is a keen member of the Art Club, said: “I love to paint. Our paintings are made into a calendar every year and we were invited to the Royal Academy of Art to show them our work. It was a really fun day!”
