Salutem Care and Education's Tiptree services sponsored walk in support of Rett UK

09/10/2023

Salutem Care and Education's dedicated staff and the individuals they support from the Henderson & Harvard Bungalows and Morley Road services in Tiptree are uniting for a sponsored walk/wheelchair push.

The challenge involves walking between the two homes four times, a four-mile journey. The event will conclude at Henderson & Harvard with a cake sale and tea party, with families and neighbours joining in the fun.

This endeavour aims to raise vital funds for Rett UK, an organisation dedicated to supporting those diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. The condition affects a small portion of the UK population, with just around 2,500 diagnoses. Significantly, two of these individuals, Rebecca Marshall and Sarah Turner, reside at Henderson & Harvard Bungalows.

Salutem Care and Education will match fund the amount raised up to £500.

Rebecca, affectionately known as Becky, moved into Henderson & Harvard in 2021. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1990, Becky showed early signs of developmental delay by her first birthday. Her mother recalls, "No one we knew had ever heard of Rett Syndrome." The family returned to England, where Becky's diagnosis was confirmed at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Throughout their Rett journey, the family found solace and support in Rett UK. Today, Becky's heartwarming smiles resonate with all around her, leading her mother to lovingly say, "when Becky smiles, the world smiles with her."

Sarah Turner's journey started in a similar way. Initially progressing like any other baby, she was walking holding a hand, could say a few words, loved books and turned over the pages meticulously. This all changed when she was 20 months old until she was five when her regression ended. Although doctors were initially unsure, a series of health episodes led to her Rett Syndrome diagnosis.

Sarah and Becky's stories exemplify the resilience and strength of those with Rett Syndrome and the families that support them. This sponsored walk is a testament to their enduring spirit and the community's commitment to support one another.

Donations from the event will go directly to Rett UK, bolstering its mission to assist families and individuals affected by Rett Syndrome.

Danielle King, service manager said: “Becky and Sarah are very much loved by everyone who meets them. They are a pleasure to support and a massive part of our community in Tiptree.

“Even today there is not enough known about Rett Syndrome, which is almost exclusively found in girls. That’s why we wanted to make a small contribution to the charity that does so much to help the individuals and their families who live with the condition.

“We’re all very much looking forward to the walk and the individuals we support are determined that they will complete it come rain or shine!”
