SALUTEM OPENS FIRST YOUNG PERSON’S SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION

07/06/2023

Salutem Care and Education has chosen the West Midlands to open its first supported accommodation to support young care leavers to transition successfully to an independent adult life.

The new service will provide young people aged 16 and 17 preparing to leave care with their own flatlet with kitchenette and bathroom. A support worker will be available 24 hours a day and key worker sessions will cover important life skills including cooking, budgeting and securing and maintaining a tenancy.

Each person will enter into a support agreement that will develop their skills for independence.

The first young person has already entered into the four person service, transferring from a Salutem children’s home into the semi-independence programme.

Salutem offers care and support to children and young people from the ages of six to 19 with a range of different environments for individual needs including those designed specifically for learning disabilities, complex health and physical disabilities, social, emotional and mental health needs and solo occupancy to support challenging behaviours.

The supported accommodation enhances the continuum of care ethos of Salutem, meaning children and young people receive the appropriate support and care they need to achieve the best outcomes.

The company plans to open a similar service in July in Essex and will expand into areas where the company operates clusters of homes.

Karen Jackson, Divisional Director - Childrens at Salutem said: “I’m really proud of this new service, which will enable 16 and 17 year olds who need less intensive support to live semi-independently and learn the skills they need to make a success of forging their own lives.

“The individuals we support benefit from skilled, personalised support from committed staff in a caring and structured environment andthis now extends to preparing then for adulthood.”
