SALUTEM TO OPEN NEW SUPPORTED LIVING SERVICE IN MORECAMBE

Salutem Care and Education is developing a new Supported Living service in Morecambe for young people graduating from Beaumont College in Lancashire.

Beaumont College, operated by Salutem, offers specialist, bespoke day and residential education to young people aged 18-25 with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and complex needs.

Following engagement with students, professionals and families, Salutem has developed a pathway from Beaumont for young people who have completed their education at the College, enabling them to move into adulthood with continuity of care and support and access to high quality, purpose-designed accommodation.

The accommodation, which will provide tenancies for 7 young people, has been developed with Salutem’s partners, specialist housing association, Halo and is being co-produced with the young people to ensure that the environment not only meets their needs, but also reflects their personalities.

Salutem has worked closely with Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group, Cumbria County Council and Lancashire County Council on the development. The young people will transition from Beaumont College to their new home, receiving transitional support from the college, ensuring that their move from education into adult care is as seamless as possible.

As part of the care provided, the young people will be assisted with accessing further education, finding voluntary and paid employment, managing their tenancy, dealing with finances and staying safe when living independently.

Kathie Paltridge, Development Manager at Salutem Care and Education who has led on the project, said: “I am delighted with this fantastic initiative, which is a result of true partnership and co-production with people, their families and commissioners. We have listened and responded to their wishes and alongside our housing partners, Halo, have developed a bespoke care, support and accommodation offer. The new service will enable a clear pathway for young people through education into adulthood, empowering people to have choice and control over their lives, whilst ensuring continuity of specialist care.

“The young people grow and develop with us, and it’s important that we are able to support them as they transition. Supported living is all about empowering people to choose how and where they live. This service will offer fantastic opportunities for people to build on their hopes, goals and aspirations and we are delighted to facilitate the journey to maintaining or improving their independence.”

Elaine Aldous, personalised healthcare commissioner- complex adult team and complex case coordinator for NHS Midlands and Lancashire CSU, said: “The CSU- Complex Adult Team are very excited to hear about the Morcambe Bay supported living development: this is a much sought after and needed service in this area and in the supporting/surrounding? area. The CSU are looking forward to working with Salutem to move some amazing young adults into this service to enable them to move onto the next stage of their lives.

“The CSU hopes that more developments will be considered in the future such as this as there is a lack of specialist supported living placements.”

The new supported living facility is due to open in early 2023, and Salutem is working with the commissioners on similar projects over the next 24 months.
