22/05/2023

Salutem Care and Education has invested almost £250,000 in a new college campus dedicated to supporting some of our most vulnerable special school leavers to follow their Preparing for Adulthood curriculum in Ulverston, Cumbria.

Formerly based in rented rooms in a school in Barrow-in-Furness, the newly-named Beaumont College South Lakes is situated on the ground floor of Lightburn House in the town. The College was formerly opened Ulverston Town Mayor, Councillor Michelle Scrogham.

The college provides a bespoke curriculum for young adults with physical and/or learning disabilities between the ages of 16 and 25, supported by a wide range of health and therapy interventions. The therapy and assistive technology team offer a wide range of experience from a well-qualified teams who are ambitious for our students. Based on learning through creativity, this might include media, music technology, the arts and outdoor activities ranging from orienteering to adventure film-making learning are supported to develop confidence, resilience and independence for life beyond college.

The National Autistic Society praised Beaumont College for its students’ ongoing participation in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, with a number of students completing the highly coveted Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.

Beaumont College South Lakes aims to be an integral part of the local community, working closely with employers and businesses to enhance the student’s experience, and in turn contributing to the wider economy of the area.

Staff at the college are already engaging with local businesses including the Roxy Cinema and Coronation Hall to support with accessibility for its students. Young people from the college are also hoping to take part in the renowned Another Fine Fest music and arts festival.

Beaumont College, supported by Salutem are committed to further develop facilities and resources where there is a demand to ensure its special school leavers succeed beyond education.
