Truro resident finds joy and wellness in cold water swimming

01/02/2024

A Cornish woman living in adult residential services in Coosebean is praising cold water swimming for the way it helps maintain her wellbeing.

Since moving to The Mowhay, part of Salutem Care and Education, in September 2022, 35-year-old Joanne Gibson has continued to engage in her long-standing passion for cold water swimming, an activity that significantly contributes to her well-being and happiness.

Set amidst five acres of beautifully structured gardens, complete with a stone circle, a decorative fountain, an apple orchard, and home to three pet goats, The Mowhay, which specialises in support for individuals with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and sensory needs, offers a unique and nurturing environment. Residents like Joanne are encouraged to pursue a variety of interests and activities, fostering both personal growth and community involvement.

The staff at The Mowhay provide comprehensive support to residents, enabling them to participate in diverse activities. These range from attending church services and holding part-time jobs, to engaging in local volunteer projects, therapeutic sessions, and charitable endeavours.

Deputy Manager Summer Hope speaks about the positive influence of such activities: "At The Mowhay, our commitment is towards creating an environment that is both supportive and stimulating. Witnessing Joanne's dedication to cold water swimming is a clear indication of the success of our approach. It exemplifies our mission to empower each individual to find and embrace what truly brings them joy and satisfaction."

Joanne's affinity for cold water swimming began in her youth, often accompanied by her mother. She finds both solace and joy in the sea, a sentiment she shares enthusiastically: “It’s fab it is, I love it, it’s lovely.” Encouraged by her GP’s advice on the health benefits of swimming, Joanne remains eager to swim in various locations, always under the watchful eye of team members who ensure her safety.

The Mowhay is more than a residence; it is a vibrant hub that mirrors the individuality and spirit of those who live there. Each room, adorned with handmade patchwork blankets and artworks, tells the story of a well-loved and cherished home.

Joanne’s story is a shining example of the life-enriching experiences fostered at The Mowhay, where each resident is supported to not only live but to thrive, following their passions and engaging actively with the broader community.
