Young resident of Ewer Court, Colchester, embarks on inspiring London adventure

18/01/2024

Arthur, a 19-year-old resident of Ewer Court in Colchester, part of Salutem Care and Education, embarked on an unforgettable journey to the heart of London, experiencing the city's vibrant culture for the first time.

Having only previously visited London for his brother's appointments at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Arthur's dream of visiting the capital finally became a reality.

This trip included attending groundbreaking wheelchair show, "The Little Big Things," based on the memoir of Henry Fraser. Fraser, an avid sportsman and academy player with a premiership Rugby club, saw his life transform dramatically at 17 following a severe diving accident that rendered him a tetraplegic. His story of resilience, as depicted in the show, resonated deeply with Arthur, who described the production as "fantastic."

His journey to London was made possible thanks to support worker Jane Moore, who not only helped in organising the trip but also accompanied him, ensuring a memorable and smooth experience. This excursion also marked Arthur's first ride on the iconic London Underground, adding another layer of excitement to his adventure.

Ewer Court, where Arthur lives, is a residential facility in Colchester, Essex. It consists of three self-contained flats and a shared courtyard. It is dedicated to supporting individuals with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and sensory needs, encouraging them to lead active, fulfilling lives and maximising their independence.

Arthur's aspirations continue to soar, with his next goal being to visit the Monopoly Lifesized London. His journey is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the pursuit of dreams, regardless of the challenges one may face.

Dema Deam, Deputy Manager at Ewer Court, commented: “Arthur's enthusiasm and determination to explore and experience new things are truly inspiring. His trip to London is just the beginning of many more adventures for him. We are incredibly proud of his courage and adventurous spirit.”

Arthur said: “The trip was an interesting experience, and I am very grateful that the staff supported me, particularly the ride on the London Underground at rush hour! I also saw an adorable dog on the train which just capped off a great day!”
