Middlesbrough community unites to remember five-year-old Luke

15/01/2024

Family, friends and teachers gathered to dedicate a garden in the memory of five-year-old Luke Thomas on the first anniversary of his death.

Pupils at Middlesbrough’s Caldicotes Primary Academy donned multicoloured clothing to create a rainbow effect and sang a song in tribute.

The popular pupil, who excelled at school, fell ill in Autumn 2022. after developing a fast-spreading rash. He was later diagnosed with vasculitis, a group of conditions that cause the immune system to attack healthy blood vessels, causing them to become swollen and narrow.

He was rushed into hospital after his condition deteriorated and he sadly passed away on January 12, 2023.

In the months that followed, the school and community collaborated to establish a memorial garden within the academy grounds. Family, children, and staff joined forces to clear and prepare a dedicated space, removing trees, bushes, and debris. Local businesses got involved in the project, including Scott Bros from Haverton Hill, which generously supported the initiative by providing a free skip service for swift area clearance, while blacksmith Adrian Wood crafted an archway for the garden entrance. Countrywide Ground Maintenance and Thirteen, the social housing provider, also played crucial roles in the clearing process.

Helen Steele, Principal at Caldicotes Primary Academy, said: “After consulting with the community, we decided to develop an area of our grounds into a memorial garden to dedicate to Luke.

“As winter turns to spring, we look forward to developing the blank canvas by planting an array of flowers, trees and shrubs and installing trellis and raised beds. Our pupils have already begun to individually paint rocks that will form the border of the garden’s path. All of this will ensure the space truly reflects Luke’s vibrancy, energy and enthusiasm.”

Peter Scott, managing director at Scott Bros, said: “We are honoured to have played a small part in what has been a fantastic effort to create this very special space that is a celebration and fitting tribute to Luke.”

Editor’s Notes

Scott Bros. is one of North East England’s leading recycling businesses. Founded on Teesside in 1972, it was predominantly involved in the supply of tipper lorries and excavators to local authorities and the construction industry. However, since then the company has grown exponentially to deliver a comprehensive range of ‘circular economy’ services.

While still being heavily involved in haulage, skip and plant hire, the business has continually diversified to provide a comprehensive range of recycling services.
