Tiger Tots Roar Approval of Scott Bros’ Top Soil Donation For Community Garden Project

18/07/2023

Recycling experts Scott Bros has donated 20 tonnes of soil to Tiger Tots Community Day Care Nursery to nurture the next generation of Teesside gardeners.

The nursery, set in the grounds of Grangetown Community Centre, has been busy for more than a year reclaiming a neglected allotment plot to create a garden that would allow the children to explore and engage with nature.

However, it was badly overgrown, and littered with debris from greenhouses that once stood on the site. With the ground tainted, the nursery turned to Scott Bros to ask if they could replace it with a new high quality layer of soil.

The topsoil provided by Scott Bros is sourced from construction sites across the North East before being blended using green waste compost collected from homes across Teesside. It is then clear screened to ensure a fine consistency.

The youngsters at Tiger Tots, which cares for children aged 18 months to four years 11 months and the partnership nursery Tiger Cubs Community Day Care, based at the Grangetown Hub, visited the allotment to see the newly donated soil and are already eagerly planning what they would like to grow – from fruit and vegetables to insect-friendly flowers.

The allotment, which has already seen some trees and vegetables planted, will enable the children to actively participate in gardening, while cultivating a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the outdoors.

Owner Sue Herbert said: “We were lucky enough to secure a big allotment plot last March that would allow us to create a community garden.

“It was very overgrown, and it has taken a great deal of hard work by community volunteers, staff and the community families to clear it. Being given this new top soil by Scott Bros means we can really forge ahead.

“This is a great resource as it also improves the children’s physical activity, and helps promote responsibility, teamwork, numeracy, and a range of important life skills, as well as providing a place for the nurseries and the community to build strong relationships.

Peter Scott, a director of Scott Bros based at Haverton Hill, near Stockton, said: “As a family business committed to recycling and the circular economy, we were pleased to donate this top soil to support what is a fantastic community project.

“It restores a neglected area of land to productive use whist giving the children and their families an opportunity to learn about nature, gardening, and sustainability - encouraging future generations to care more deeply about their environment.”

Editor’s Notes

Scott Bros. is one of North East England’s leading recycling businesses. Founded on Teesside in 1972, it was predominantly involved in the supply of tipper lorries and excavators to local authorities and the construction industry. However, since then the company has grown exponentially to deliver a comprehensive range of ‘circular economy’ services.

While still being heavily involved in haulage, skip and plant hire, the business has continually diversified to provide a comprehensive range of recycling services.
