One of North East England’s most respected business leaders has been recognised with a top award.

Bill Scott OBE, DL has been named Inspirational Leader of the Year at The Northern Echo’s inaugural BUSINESSiQ Awards.

Held at Ramside Hall, the BUSINESSiQ Awards were established to celebrate business excellence in the North East region.

The Chief Executive Officer of Teesside-based Wilton Engineering is an engineering luminary, having created opportunities for apprentices, spearheaded equal rights for women, focused on workplace health and safety and supported local charities.

Created to support the delivery of a pipeline of projects in the offshore energy and defence industries, Wilton Engineering is a growing presence in the area in response to the increased level of investment in the area as part of the government’s levelling up initiative, including the creation of the Teesside Freeport, of which Wilton is part of.

Bill is a keen advocate of supporting the UK’s supply chain and works closely with trade organisations, the government and advises other companies to support growth by utilising his vast and varied experience.

He is passionate about inspiring the next generation and engages with schools, colleges and universities.

He is also patron and trustee of The Teesside Charity and Honorary Doctor of Business Administration at Teesside University, all of which have contributed to him being awarded an OBE in 2019, alongside his services to engineering, and services to the offshore wind sector.

Bill was also made Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire in March 2023.

He said: “As a Boro boy who has built up a business, which has been instrumental in shaping the future of so many people on Teesside, I am incredibly proud and honoured to have been recognised by this award.

“Teesside is brimming with talent and is continuing to see investment, create opportunities and play a vital role in the community.”

“But this business is all about its people. I’m still learning every day. We don’t have any hierarchy here to stop that. Yes, I’m the CEO but I’m just an employee of the company and I think that’s where a lot of people go wrong.

“They need to grasp that and understand that every person matters. It doesn’t matter what you do from the guys in the shop floor, the office, the account staff, the finance people, the planners, they’ve all got a job to do.”
