YARM PUPILS CROWNED NATIONAL HOCKEY CHAMPIONS

03/05/2023

Yarm School’s Under-16s boys’ hockey team has won the tier three national schools hockey championship for the second year in a row.

Taking place in Nottingham, the annual tournament sees schools representing each region come together to battle it out, in an attempt to win some silverware for their school.

After qualifying from a tough group, the pupils faced London-based Eltham College in the final, which proved to be a game that was dominated by Yarm and resulted in a 2-0 victory with the U16 boys bringing the trophy home to Teesside.

The victorious U16 boys are part of a range of successful sports teams at Yarm with the girl’s netball teams also triumphing on the national stage. Both the U14 and U16 girls have excelled at the highest level with both teams finishing in top the 20 nationally in their respective age grades.

Also adding to the recent success is the Under-14s boys’ hockey team, which recently finished fourth at the 2023 England Hockey Notts Sport Schools Championship Finals.

The on-field achievements come at a time when Yarm School is ranked as one of the top 40 schools for sport in the country. The School Sport magazine ranking sees Yarm represented in the top 2% of schools based on sporting excellence.

Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster, said: “This is an amazing achievement for our hardworking and dedicated pupils and teachers. Retaining a national title in hockey shows the high level of sport and the consistency at Yarm.

“To have two netball teams qualify for the National Finals is also an impressive feat and to finish with a fourth place for our U14 boys’ team is fantastic. Congratulations to our players, and thanks to the passionate and hardworking staff who support the development and progress of our young sportspeople.”

Gary Ferguson, Director of Sport at Yarm School, said: “Congratulations to all our teams for demonstrating an excellent level of consistency throughout the season and national stage.

“It’s great to see so many different age groups competing at such a high level and they should be very proud of their achievements. The commitment and dedication of pupils, teachers and coaches, and the way they have all worked together is the key to this success.”

The tier three league is one of the levels of competitive opportunities for schools introduced by England Hockey in 2018.
